Leona E. Schalla, 82, of New Philadelphia, O., died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, in Union Hospital at Dover, O.

Born July 10, 1919, in Grosse, Brule County, S.D., she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Martha Polenz Schwiesow. Leona graduated from Chamberlain, S.D., High School and was a secretary for the Central Intelligence Agency.

Leona was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia and the National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees. She enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, crocheting and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Joyce (Russell) Kullman of Dover Plains, N.Y., Karen (Robert) Grossart of Palos Heights, Ill., and Nina Brandt of New Philadelphia; a son, Erich (Diane) Schalla of Silver Spring, Md.; nine grandchildren, Christine and Stephanie Brandt, Gregory and Jonathan Grossart, Jenifer Beebe, Tracie Callahan, Ken, Chris and Maria Kullman; five great-grandchildren, Samantha and Chase Beebe, Amanda, Rylee and Shane Callahan; and a brother, William (Lorraine) Schwiesow.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Erich Carl Schalla Sr., in 1956; daughter, Marilyn Schalla; son, Denis Schalla; a sister, Leila Speckels; and two brothers, Larry W. Stevens and Philip Schwiesow.

There will be a visitation Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia. A funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Alexandria, Va. Burial will be in Columbia Gardens at Arlington, Va.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bethesda Lutheran Home, 700 Hoffmann Dr., Watertown, Wis. 53094.
